Primary alveolar hypoventilation

Causes and Risks:
The cause of this disease is unknown. The condition is usually worse during sleep, and periods of apnea ( cessation of breathing ) are usually present. The disease affects men 20 to 50 years old; it can also be present in male children.

Prevention:
There is no known prevention.

Treatment:
Medications that stimulate the respiratory system may be used. Augmentation of breathing with mechanical devices may be helpful in some patients. Oxygen therapy may be helpful in some patients, but may produce worse night symptoms in others.
