Retina Information: Definition: Internal
layer of the eye that receives and transmits focused images. The retina is
normally red due to its rich blood supply. It can be seen with an
ophthalmoscope, which allows the examiner to see through the pupil and lens to
the retina. Changes in color of the retina or changes in the appearance of
retinal blood vessels may indicate disease. Changes in color perception and in
vision also indicate disease and indicate the need for retinal examination. This
is an illustration of a cross-section and frontal view of the eye.
